Joan Elaine Walker

Joan Walker, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on June 3, 2026, in Orange. She was born on February 24, 1940, in Rayville, La.

A memorial gathering will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Commonground Community Church in Bridge City.

Joan dedicated many years to her family as a housewife. Later in life, at the age of 48, she pursued her passion for education, earning her Bachelor's degree. She then taught 3rd grade at Orangefield Elementary for many years until her retirement. She found great joy in working with children and was known for making learning fun for her students.

A talented seamstress, much like her mother, Joan created countless amazing outfits and clothing for her family. She also embraced quilting, crafting beautiful quilts for family and friends. Joan was a master gardener, finding peace and joy in tending to her flower beds. An avid reader, she could often breeze through a book in a day or two. She was a devoted member of Commonground Community Church in Bridge City, where she served, worshipped, and cultivated many cherished friendships.

Joan is survived by her son, James Benjamin Walker, II and his wife, Sherry of Orange; her daughter, Jane Walker Hutto of Orange; her daughter, Jennifer Walker Chauvin and her husband, Tim of Bridge City; and her daughter-in-law, Shirley Walker of Orange. She is also survived by her siblings, Sherry Stevenson of Georgia, Dale Norwood and his wife, Becky of Texas, and Nan Norwood of Louisiana, as well as numerous other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Walker Sr.; her son, Joey Walker; her brother, Jimmy Norwood; and her parents, Thurmon J. and Eva Norwood.
